Australian allrounder Mitch Marsh has withdrawn from his deal at Surrey and could miss Australia’s next Test campaign because of the need for ankle surgery.

Marsh’s stock rose when he made two centuries during Australia’s 4-0 defeat of England, but his ankle problems intensified as the series developed.

That means a withdrawal from his Surrey deal as well as missing Australia’s limited-overs tour of England and Ireland in June.

Marsh hopes to be available for Australia’s away Test series against Pakistan in September / October and Surrey are clinging to the hope that he may play in the final stages of the Specsavers Championship.

Marsh said: “I’ll be doing everything I can to get myself fully fit and hopefully join the side later in the season.”

Marsh had been due to play for Surrey in all three formats, leaving them with a gap to fill with the Championship season only days away.

It is his second operation in less than a year: he also underwent a shoulder operation after a tour of India.
